American citizen hijacks small plane . . . killed by legal gun owner

On one hand the report states "The hijacker was fatally shot in the chest by a passenger who had a licensed firearm, police said." And then goes on to report "It is not yet clear how the hijacker was able to get on the plane with a knife, police said." Together they imply either there would...

Land on desert or fields in Arizona

I've been in a plane that landed-out on a plowed field - in a SGS 2-33A on July 26, 2008. I was a student pilot, front seat, with CFII in back seat. CFII was short and couldn't see the altimeter or airspeed indicator from her position. We were towed north from OG48, a grass field in Oregon. Had...

Land on desert or fields in Arizona

My first inclination is to go with a plowed field, ideally parallel to the plowed direction. A plowed field will have had rocks removed and be evened out for tractors to move over. None of that is true of virgin terrain having shrubs, even when the shrubs are not collision hazards.

    Bought a Bonanza S35

Is that number 3 or 4 aircraft you now own? I seem to recall you have (or had) a Cardinal, a glider (make/model escapes me), a C-150, and now a Bonanza?

    Nice feature of myflightbook.com

I created an account on myflightbook.com back in May 2024 but didn't try to copy entries from my physical log book until a couple months ago. Recently discovered it has a "Visited Airports" summary report, which is nice, but it will also generate a Google map that shows the locations of airports...

    List of VORs and locations?

My understanding is that arcgis.com is the authoritative source. Try here: https://adds-faa.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/navaid-system/explore?showTable=true Then on the left-hand side click on "Download". When I downloaded the CSV format it was clear that the first two columns were longitude...

    More idiocy by the TSA

Wikipedia has a list of notable hijackings going back to 1919: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_hijackings Since Sept. 11, 2001 the only notable hijacking/terror attempts that have occurred in the US were by a suicidal man in a Cessna 208 and an off-duty pilot riding in a jump seat...

    More idiocy by the TSA

There isn't any evidence that these highly subjective criteria narrow things down. Indeed, when made public they become easily subverted. A simple back-test is to examine what was likely observed of the terrorists and hijackers during past incidents. Did the 9-11 hijackers yawn a lot, etc.?

Upgrading plane to IFR suitable for training and practical exam

Of course redundancy is always desired. But consider the backups that existed for VOR or ILS/localizer failures prior to the advent of GPS. A prominent backup was contacting ATC for vectors to an alternate. That is still a good choice for GPS failure. I started making a table with each row...

Upgrading plane to IFR suitable for training and practical exam

Good point on the DPE. It was my plan to verify my installation plans with the DPE I was thinking of using for the exam.

Upgrading plane to IFR suitable for training and practical exam

I too had understood the need for more than GPS nav. But during my researches I discovered the FAA has recently rescinded two earlier legal interpretation letters in this 2022 memorandum and then made changes to Order 8900.1 that gave clearer definitions of "different kinds of approaches": As...

Upgrading plane to IFR suitable for training and practical exam

I'm planning to upgrade my 1956 C-172 to be IFR legal enough to learn and exam for an IFR rating. For navigation requirements my research indicates I could do it with a single WAAS GPS solution like a Garmin GPS 175 or GNC 355 tied to a HSI display. A local CFII suggested I should also install a...

New video series Flying Through the Gyroplane Flying Handbook

Interesting thing to me is that the gyroplane that appears on the left-hand side of Figure 15-1 in the FAA handbook is the same make and model that is shown flying and landing in the 1934 movie "It Happened One Night" starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. I recently watched that film only...

Bankruptcy was expected to happen by many should the Justice Department block Spirit's merger with JetBlue. Justice claimed the merger would reduce competition. After Justice succeeded in blocking the merger they claimed it was “a victory for U.S. travelers who deserve lower prices and better...
