    Starting a flying club

We've come to an agreement on lease terms. They will perform an annual on it. I need to acquire insurance for the club. (Learning about aviation insurance was a chore.) And a few other minor tasks left to do. Once the annual is done and insurance is purchased we get to use the plane. I posted a...

    Back to balloon warfare?

I agree with all that except the idea there is some translation issue. The foreign ministry is going to employ and use correct language since that is their stock in trade. My limited experience with Chinese is that while many know English well enough to humorously butcher it, the people who...

    Back to balloon warfare?

My post above includes a quote from the Wall Street Journal which in turn quotes the Chinese foreign ministry that used the word airship, not balloon. After it was shot down the Chinese foreign ministry again used the term airship: "The Chinese side has repeatedly informed the US side after...

    Starting a flying club

Turns out the Aerobat can be flown IFR. Single NAV/COM though. That's original paint, or so the current owner says. Been through 3 owners.

    Back to balloon warfare?

Here's a link to the WSJ story where I read the claims: https://www.wsj.com/articles/china-says-it-is-looking-into-spy-balloon-allegation-by-u-s-11675415310?st=169y95x2pzlxrd5&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink In case that doesn't provide access, some quotes from the article: China said a...

He has other planes and says he isn't flying the Aerobat all that much. But probably doesn't want to sell yet, hence the offer to lease it to us.

    Back to balloon warfare?

Apparently it is more like an airship than a free balloon since it has propulsion with enough power to perform station keeping under an unknown amount of wind. Probably controlled from the ground once over the US, though could be autonomous since it had to travel over the ocean on its own. But...

    Starting a flying club

Got hit with planning whiplash today - but for the good. Out of the proverbial blue (in keeping with the aviation theme) an email came in from a fellow asking if the club was interested in leasing his 1972 Cessna A150L Aerobat. Um, hell yeah! Anyway, another co-conspirator and I are going to...

    Back to balloon warfare?

The threat is over inflated. Seriously though, I'd like to know how the balloon is "lingering" over Montana and not getting blown eastward. I believe one technique is to test the wind direction at different altitudes, some which hopefully flow in opposite directions. Then change altitude to...

    Starting a flying club

I'm used to 20 minutes drives to the airport to get my flying fix in. I may not tolerate a 50 minute drive just to save money while also trying to protect an old airplane from the elements. I'll do the drive to the Sturgis airport tomorrow just to see how it goes.

    Starting a flying club

The club now shows as being registered with the state. Woohoo! Downloaded and printed the paperwork for purposes of opening an account at the credit union tomorrow. Got an EIN from the IRS and assembled other requested paperwork (e.g. they want to see meeting minutes where we authorized opening...

Flying a non GPS approach using a GTN 750 with outdated databases

If you are just using the radios to feed data to ILS glideslope and localizer needles (on a traditional or a digital display) then of course the database is not involved. If you get ATC instructions to a fix you perform your own database lookup on the paper/EFB chart on your lap. Back in the day...

Flying a non GPS approach using a GTN 750 with outdated databases

If you aren't using any of the GTN's database information during approach (i.e. tuned the radios and following the procedure based on info on a current paper or EFB chart or plate) I don't see why not. Consider table 1-1-6 in this part of the AIM if you were doing a GPS approach with the GTN...

    Starting a flying club

Held the first club meeting. There were just three of us. This is a slightly redacted copy of meeting notes I emailed to all interested prospects: Hi all, Paul, David, and I met at the restaurant this afternoon. We decided that there were just enough of us to move forward on forming the club...

Is your airplane kept in a hangar?

For something like a C-150 I see Bruce's Custom Covers has padded wing covers to handle small to moderate hail size, but not larger hail: https://www.aircraftcovers.com/150 So that's a possible option.

Is your airplane kept in a hangar?

No airplane cover while at a tie-down? My main concern is hail. Thunderstorms can form in the Black Hills and head east within a matter of hours. Even when clear weather has been forecast.

Is your airplane kept in a hangar?

Do you keep your airplane (or airplanes) in a hangar? What does it cost? If not hangared, what do you do to protect it? My local situation: Hangar space is scarce at KRAP (Rapid City). Last fall I was quoted $330/month for an airplane like a C-150 in an FBO's hangar. A shared hangar was (and...
